Azerbaijan to Set up TV Channel to Broadcast in Caucasus

Trend, Baku, 22 Sep 2008 – The Azerbaijani National Broadcasting Council (NBC) plans to establish a TV channel to be broadcasted in the Caucasus countries.

“Azerbaijan plays an important role in the region for its economic potential, oil and gas resources as well as for its geo-strategic and geopolitical position. Therefore, a new TV channel should be established in Baku for the Caucasus countries,” Nushiravan Maharramli, the chairman of the NBC, told Trend News on 22 September.

A total of 22 TV channels function in Azerbaijan, including 7 broadcasted throughout the country and 15 only in regions.

A TV channel to broadcast in the Caucasus should broadcast in three languages, including Azerbaijani, Russian and English, Maharramli said.

“It is not so to easy. Private type of management of the television may cause great difficulties. We see these difficulties even now. If the government allocates funds to finance and to supporting this project, we will create the new TV channel broadcasting in Caucasus with great pleasure. We have such an idea,” the chairman of the Council said.
